SMS: The Basics

What is SMS?

SMS (Short Message Service) allows sending and receiving text messages over cellular networks.

What is P2P and A2P messaging?

A2P, or application-to-person messaging, is a type of SMS sent from a subscriber to an application or sent from an application to a subscriber. P2P, or person-to-person messaging, is generally defined as a two-way (back and forth) messaging conversation between two people.

What is alphanumeric sender ID?

Alphanumeric Sender ID allows you to set your company name or brand as the Sender ID when sending one-way SMS messages to supported countries and carriers. Alphanumeric Sender IDs may be up to 11 characters.

What is the advantage of using text messaging?

SMS is a reliable and dependable platform for sending important information out, it’s the ideal tool for businesses to communicate critical and time sensitive information. SMS messages are short and sweet and boast a 98% read rate.

Do I need to sign a contact?

Can I enable SMS messaging on my existing toll-free phone number?

YES, please contact your Account Manager, or Sales team at sales@intelepeer.com, to get started.

Can I use my IntelePeer number for SMS?

YES, IntelePeer numbers are text enabled.

Can I receive replies?

YES, IntelePeer offers 2-way messaging.

Is there a limit on message length?

The character limit for a single SMS message is 160 characters, but IntelePeer also supports concatenated (long) messages.

Can I send group text messages with my account?

NO, group messages are not supported via SMS.

Can I purchase more than one number? How many?

YES, you can use our Atmosphere portal to purchase as many numbers as you need.

How can I receive SMS messages from my customers?

2-way SMS is supported by using Long Codes, Short Codes or Toll-Free Numbers. MO (Mobile Originated) SMS messages can be received via SmartFlows, Engage or API

How do I receive a Delivery Receipt?

Delivery Reports are offered via API

How long does it take to get up and running with SMS?

You can be up and running within a few seconds using Long Codes or Toll-Free Numbers, which you can provision directly from the Atmosphere portal. Short Codes provisioning takes between 8 and 12 weeks and require additional documentation and carrier approvals.

How do I integrate my SMS campaigns with my other channels for message consistency?

You can use our Atmosphere Smartflows and Engage campaign manager.

Special Characters?

YES, we support GSM-7 and UCS-2 encoding.

What happens when I attempt to send a messages to a landline number?

If the landline number has been text-enabled, the SMS will be delivered.

Do mobile users get charged for sending back the responses?

YES, standard messages and data rates may apply. Depending on your text plan, the mobile users may be charged by their carriers.

Can you guarantee delivery of every text messages that I send?

NO, as text messaging is dependent on carriers and their networks, as well the reachability of the terminating number (i.e. phone switched off, no service or incorrect number).

MMS

What is the difference between SMS and MMS?

SMS lets you send a message of up to 160 characters to another device, while MMS also allows sending of pictures, video or audio content over cellular network.

Does IntelePeer support MMS messages?

NO, IntelePeer does not currently support MMS messages.

Short Codes. Long Codes, and Toll Free Numbers

What are the industry standards for U.S. short code?

U.S. rules require explicit opt-in before consumers can be sent promotional text messages, as well as a way to opt-out by sending STOP. Industry standards also require a compliant response whenever subscribers’ text the keyword HELP to your short code. Full industry standards can be found in the CTIA Short Code Monitoring Handbook.

Can I port my existing Long Code, Toll Free Number or Short Code to Intelepeer?

How long does it take to provision a US short code?

The process for provisioning a dedicated SMS short code typically takes between 8 and 12 weeks and is regulated by the U.S. Short Code Administrator.

What are different sender ID options?

In the U.S. Long Codes, Short Codes and Toll-Free numbers, while internationally Long Codes, Short Codes and Alphanumeric (all are country and carrier dependable).

What is the Verizon 10 DLC change?

International

Does IntelePeer offer International SMS?

YES, IntelePeer offer U.S. as well as International SMS.

Will my short code work internationally?

NO, U.S. short codes will only work within the United States.

How do I send SMS internationally?

We offer a selected number of countries within our Atmosphere portal. For additional countries please contact your Account Manager, or Sales team at sales@intelepeer.com for more information.

Can I send SMS internationally while using a US long-code?

NO, if you are interested in international 2-way SMS we support local Long Codes and Short Codes (country and carrier dependent).
